300 years of history and knowledge about the healing properties of local alpine herbs

Apotheke und Drogerie zur Gnadenmutter was founded in 1718.
From 1820 to 1871 it was led by Michael Hölzl. He was probably the most recognised botanist and medicinal plant expert of his time in Europe, supplying renowned universities as far away as Moscow with Alpine plants and drawing on his special knowledge of the healing effects of local Alpine herbs.
The Austrian Archduke Johann and the famous poet Franz Grillparzer also sought his advice time and again, undertaking legendary ‘herbal’ walks with him.
His extensive knowledge and secret formulas remained with the pharmacy. They are still made by hand today using the same recipes. Over 400 medicinal plants and herbs are used – the best and most recognised that European nature and tradition have to offer.
One of the oldest recipes even dates back to 1780. Since then, the “Mariazell Stomach Drops” have been made by hand according to the original recipe. They became world-famous at the beginning of the last century when they were awarded the highest honours for their quality and impact at international exhibitions in Vienna, Brussels, Antwerp, London and Paris.
